Quick Answer
Learning history in Pinnacle Series follows the course object ID, not the content name, so a consistent naming convention does not preserve history but makes archived and versioned content easier to find, filter and interpret in Content and in reporting.
What This Article Helps With
This article explains how to name Courses, SCORM packages and other content when updating or retiring them. The right naming approach depends on whether content is updated in place, replaced by a new version, or unpublished.
Naming for In-Place Course Updates
An in-place update, such as Upload New Package on a SCORM item, keeps the same course object ID and learning history. For in-place updates, keep the Course title the same so learners and administrators can still find the Course.
- Track the version in the SCORM package file name, for example Revit-Fundamentals_v2.3_2026-10.zip.
- Record each update in the Revision field on the Course Overview tab.
Naming for New Versions and Archived Content
A new Course version is a new course object, so learning history is split between the archived and current Courses. A shared base name lets reporting users connect the two Courses. For example:
| Status | Example name |
|---|---|
| Current version | Revit Fundamentals (2026) |
| Archived version | [ARCHIVED] Revit Fundamentals (2024) – Retired Oct 2026 |
Naming Content Before Unpublishing
Pinnacle Series reporting shows null for Topic(s), Subtopic(s), Library(s) and Attribute(s) on unpublished content, so the Content Name is the only descriptive information left. Before unpublishing content, add the Library or Topic to the content name. For example: [ARCHIVED] Engineering Standards – Technical Standards Reference – Retired Oct 2026.
Helpful Tips
- Agree one naming pattern and document it so every content manager follows the same convention.
- Keep the base name identical across versions, because small wording differences make filtering in reporting unreliable.
- Use years or dates in visible titles rather than version numbers alone.
- The examples above show one possible pattern. Adapt the pattern to your organization, then apply the pattern consistently.
- The Archive Register (Excel) includes a Name Builder that creates archived names in this pattern and records each retired asset's metadata.
Common Questions
Does renaming a Course affect its learning history?
Learning history follows the course object ID rather than the Course name.
Should I add a version number to the Course title when I update a SCORM file?
No. Keep the Course title the same for in-place updates and track the version in the SCORM package file name or the Revision field.
Why add the Library or Topic to the name of unpublished content?
Reporting shows null for Topic(s), Subtopic(s), Library(s) and Attribute(s) on unpublished content. Including the Library or Topic in the content name keeps the content identifiable in reporting.
