Quick Answer
Assignment Management offers two ways to cancel an assignment: Drop Assignment, which cancels the assignment but keeps it reflected in the user's records, and Remove Assignment, which deletes the assignment from the user's records entirely. Assignments can also be removed in bulk, but a row hidden by an active search or filter is still deleted if it is part of a confirmed bulk selection.
What This Article Helps With
This article is for Pinnacle Series Administrators who need to cancel one or more user Assignments in Assignment Management, and want to understand the difference between Drop Assignment and Remove Assignment.
Understanding Drop Assignment vs. Remove Assignment
When canceling an Assignment in Assignment Management, the Remove Assignment dialog presents two options:
- Drop Assignment: the dropped Assignment will reflect in the records. The cancellation is visible — there is a record that the Assignment existed and was dropped.
- Remove Assignment: the removed Assignment will be removed from the records. No record remains that the Assignment was ever made.
Both options are available for content Assignments (such as Courses or Learning Paths). Assessment Assignments only offer Remove Assignment - there is no Drop option for assessments.
Drop or Remove a Single Assignment
- Navigate to the Admin Portal.
- Open Assignment Management.
- Locate the Assignment you want to cancel.
- Select the Assignment and choose to remove it. The Remove Assignment dialog opens.
- Choose Drop Assignment or Remove Assignment, depending on whether you want the cancellation to remain reflected in the user's records.
- Confirm the action.
Confirm the Assignment no longer appears as active for the user, and that it reflects in the records as expected based on whether you chose Drop or Remove.
Remove Multiple Assignments in Bulk
Assignment Management also supports removing multiple Assignments at once using the bulk Remove action (trash icon) in the Assignments toolbar. Bulk removal is no longer limited to a single content item - a single bulk selection can include unrelated Assignments across different users and courses.
- In Assignment Management, select the checkboxes for the Assignments you want to remove.
- Select the bulk Remove (trash icon) action in the Assignments toolbar.
- Before confirming, clear or review any active search or filter criteria. A row that is currently hidden by a search or filter is still deleted if it is part of your confirmed bulk selection - it does not need to be visible to be removed.
- Confirm the bulk removal.
Confirm that only the intended Assignments were removed, including any that may have been hidden by a search or filter at the time of the bulk action.
