When creating a document in the Management Utility and adding a hyperlink, you may notice a drop-down selection for 'target frame' options. These options control how hyperlinks behave when clicked by a user.

This article explains each of the 'target frame' options.

In the context of editing a document within the MU, the "Target frame" options for hyperlinks refer to how the hyperlink will behave when clicked by the end user.

Here's what each option typically does in this scenario:
-
New window: The hyperlink will open the linked content in a new browser window or tab. This is useful if you want the learner to keep the original document open and view the link content separately.
-
Parent frame: When you open a webpage, it may be divided into multiple sections, each displaying different content. Some of these sections, or "frames," load independently. A "parent frame" is the larger section that surrounds other smaller sections (like a box containing smaller boxes). When you create a hyperlink and select the "parent frame" option, you're telling the link to open in the larger, outer section of the webpage (the parent frame), instead of just opening in one of the smaller sections. When to use it? If you're linking to a page and you want it to appear in the full browser window (or a larger part of it), choosing the "parent frame" option ensures the content isn't confined to just a small section of the screen.
-
Same frame: The hyperlink will open within the same frame or window where the document is currently viewed. This replaces the document content with the linked content within the same display area.
-
Whole page: This option will cause the hyperlink to open in the full browser window, replacing the entire Pinnacle Series interface or document editing interface with the linked content.
-
New window: The hyperlink will open the linked content in a new browser window or tab. This is useful if you want the learner to keep the original document open and view the link content separately.
